How many Neurofeedback sessions do you need for a mild TBI?

Dr.Othmer had this to say in a neurofeedback listserv discussion of how many sessions are required to improve mild brain injury:

"One of the real surprises we found in reviewing early data by Jonathan Walker,MD, which he kindly made available to us, is that the median number of sessions to reach an average recovery to within 85% of premorbid conditions in minor TBI was 32 sessions.

There were indeed cases that extended to more than 80 sessions, but the fact is that most minor TBI cases recover quickly.

When Dr. Walker gradually shifted over to QEEG-based training, and lately more specifically to coherence-based training, neither of these figures (recovery with respect to premorbid function, and the mean number of training sessions required to achieve this) was significantly different from before.

If 40 total sessions could be specified rather than 4-6 weeks, some 90% of mTBI cases could be restored to effective functioning. That would be a nice start, and probably all that can be expected at this point.

Incidentally, the use of the term "optimal" in this connection is a give-away that the perspective of the client is not determinative in this document."
